Some Myths about the new Single Site Acute Care Hospital
1. In order to serve both Windsor and Essex County residents effectively, the new hospital must be built on the edge of the city. MYTH
The majority of Windsor and Essex County’s population resides in Windsor, LaSalle and Tecumseh, nearly 70%. A central location would best serve the largest population mass, and with up and ongoing improvements to our regional highway network, access to the city centre for communities distant from Windsor is becoming even easier.
2. 50-60 acres of greenfield land is required to build our new hospital. MYTH
Currently the largest hospital in Canada is being built upon 40 acres of brownfield land only 2 kilometers from downtown Montreal. The largest hospital in BC is planned 3 kilometres outside of downtown Vancouver on a mere 15 acres. The facts are, smaller sites will work and still offer room for future expansion if creative planning measures are taken. By mandating a large site we’ve precluded an urban location from the start.
3. We cannot consider anything but healthcare delivery in the planning of this new hospital. MYTH
Hospital administration and municipal governments across Canada and the United States are working closely together more than ever. “MEDS & EDS” act as valuable urban anchors and attract residents and businesses. Cities such as Toronto, Buffalo and Detroit are working closely with anchor institutions like hospitals to establish common goals and develop relationships that both benefit the city and the institution.
