The Metropolitan and Ouellette campuses of Windsor Regional Hospital are surrounded by ancillary businesses, including many doctors' offices and eateries. There are also hundreds of homes in the neighbourhoods surrounding these campuses. Many of these residents work in the hospitals.

If the new hospital is located at some distance from the existing campuses, over time, doctors will relocate their offices to areas that are more convenient. Restaurants will also be affected, as will house prices in the surrounding areas, because many hospital staff will, over time, also migrate to areas that give them shorter commuting times to and from work.
Thus the location of the hospital will have a much broader impact on the community than is at first apparent. Choosing the optimum location must include expert opinions from planners who can advise the steering committee as to how such a complex task has been tackled in other cities, and what the likely impacts will be of the different sites on the table. |
